Description

Quinta do Vallado is a small but perfectly formed producer in Portugal. This wine is a blend of a number of different Portuguese grape varieties which are usually used to make port. It has flavours of rich, spicy bramble fruit. A big, dark, concentrated wine with a real show-stopping attitude. Plums, blackberries, cocoa, cinnamon, anis and vanilla all make appearances. Ripe, chewy tannins and clean acidity provide the backdrop. This eighteenth century Douro wine estate is actually one of the most modern-looking in Portugal. Although the team uses the traditional panoply of indigenous grapes, their methods are bang up to date and the results are nothing short of sensational. Unusually for the region, Quinta do Vallado’s priority is making table wines rather than Port, although their 10 year old Tawny is a superb partner for everything from ripe Stilton to ginger cake. The success of this approach has been borne out by the spicy, rich Tinto Reserva walking off with a host of trophies at both the IWC and Decanter awards. Portuguese wines are really starting to develop a strong following here in the UK, so it’s pretty exciting for us to be able to offer you wines from what we believe is one the most dynamic winery in the region.
