NV The Peppermint Paddock Red Sparkling Chambourcin, d’Arenberg

£24.45

The mousse is vibrant purple and persistent, the bead lively; a glass full of fun. The nose is a swirl of spiced plums, dark jubes, cherries and ripe red berries dusted with sweet spice for lift. It’s a heady mix, drawing you back for another whiff of winter berries and layers of licorice and earth.

The palate is full and fresh, spicy with a creamy mouthfeel and there is just enough tannin to keep it all in check. The acidity is mineral-laced and linear providing a back-bone of freshness.

The finish is long, clean and taught. This wine is ready for drinking now and it will also reward extended bottle aging. It works a treat with friends up for a bit of fun or accompanying food with a twist like a red duck curry.

Description

Upon release this wine exhibits a deep appearance of vibrant black, crimson-purple mousse with a fine persistent bead that looks simply inviting. The aroma is initially restrained but as it opens up the level of fruit richness and concentration becomes quite obvious. The aromas are dry, dominated with a mix of liquorice and spiced plum pudding notes with a sweet seductive array of small red berries such as mulberries and raspberries. As the wine further opens up really super concentrated red fruit characters develop such as maraschino cherry, prune juice and boysenberry. The palate is cool, rich and dry and extremely refreshing with an abundant red fruit flavours, mixed with dried herb notes and edges of tarry tannins and mineral-like acidity. The finish is dry but with plenty of strong red fruit flavours that linger for some time, which is just what a wine with this sort of concentration should have. Family owned d’Arenberg is located in the breathtaking McLaren Vale in South Australia, and produces an enviable range of wines. From humble beginnings, these wines quickly gained cult status amongst imbibers and judges alike – it’s a deft combination of winemaking tradition and vinous innovation. A tall order for some, but one that d’Arenberg takes in their stride as they continue to push the boundaries and get under the skin of each individual vineyard in order to get the best from the vines. This is backed up by an engaging consumer-friendly approach to the ‘deadly serious fun’ of wine. Food matching note: The wine goes with well with a rich spicy dishes, a curry that has plenty of heat, or just on its own.
